Back Pain

Back pain is a common problem.  Research suggests that sixty percent of adults suffer from back pain every year, and half of these become chronic sufferers.  Back pain is most often the result of inactivity, poor posture, an injury or overuse but it can often be prevented by following some very simple advice.

Ankle Sprains

A sprain is an injury that occurs to one or more of the ligaments in the ankle.  Ligaments are strong bands of tissue that connect bone to bone and during a sprain they can become overstretched, twisted or torn. Most sprains are caused my rolling the foot inwards which could be a result of uneven ground, misplacement of the foot, a fall, or landing on an object. These sprains can cause varying degrees of pain, swelling and inflammation depending on the severity of the injury.  It can also lead to instability of the ankle joint.

Whiplash

The term whiplash refers to damage of neck structures (usually the spine and its nerves and ligaments) caused by a sudden, uncontrolled movement of the head and neck.  It is commonly associated with road traffic accidents and contact sports where there is rapid acceleration and deceleration causing hyper extension/flexion of the neck.  Approximately 250,000 people suffer from whiplash injuries in the UK each year.  Symptoms may be isolated to the neck area, however, other problems can be found within the shoulders, arms, and back.

Overuse injuries

Overuse injuries can be simply defined as stiffness and pain which occurs when repetitive microtrauma overloads the ability of a tissue to repair itself.  Common examples include tennis elbow and golfer's elbow.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition causing fatigue and widespread pain in the fibrous tissues of the body (muscles, tendons and ligaments).  It is also associated with multiple tender points throughout the body which cause pain when lightly touched.  No-body knows the exact cause of fibromyalgia, however, middle-aged women and people with rheumatoid arthritis or other auto-immune disorders are more likely to develop the condition.  Research also suggests that is can be triggered by trauma (i.e. a car accident).

Plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the plantar fascia (the tissue that connects your heel to your toes) which causes heel pain.  It can be a stabbing or burning pain that's usually worse in the morning because the fascia tightens (contracts) overnight. Once your foot loosens up with activity, the pain normally decreases, but it may return after long periods of standing or after getting up from a seated position.
