Sprains can cause varying degrees of pain, swelling and inflammation depending on the severity of the injury.  It can also lead to instability of the ankle joint.

Help speed up recovery

Immediately after your injury start to use P.R.I.C.E:

P   Protect your ankle from further injury. You may use tape, Tubigrip, or an ankle

     support to do this.

R  Rest from all activities.  Use a cane or crutches until you can walk without

      pain or limping.

I    Ice the area for 10 minutes.  You can repeat this process up to every half an

hour.  Wrap the ice in a damp towel to avoid ice burn.

C  Use a bandage or double thickness Tubigrip to compress the area and control

the swelling.  Loosen the wrap if your toes go blue or feel cold.

E   Keep your ankle elevated above heart level to help decrease the swelling.

Alternatively, elevate it above hip level if it is more appropriate to do so
